Amavasya signifies beginning of new month as per the lunar calendar followed in the Hindu religion. Many festivals including Diwali are celebrated on this day and it is also observed as a day of fasting by many Hindu people. As it is considered to be the day of new beginnings, it is a time to discard the old habits, thoughts, failures and negative effects and adopt the promise of new light brought about by the moon. This is also the day when the dark side of the moon is revealed after completing its waning cycle of 14 days.
