Shri Krishna Janmashtami is dedicated to Lord Krishna and is observed to celebrate His birth. It falls on the eighth day of the Krishna Paksha of the month of Shravana, when the Rohini Nakshatra is ascendant as per Hindu calendar. It is also called as Krisnashtami, Saatam Aatam, Gokulashtami, Ashtam Rohini, Shri Krishna Jayanti and Janmashtami. It is believed that Lord Vishnu took incarnation in the form of Lord Krishna to rid the world of all evils and negative influences. For this, He took part in the Great Battle of Mahabharata to facilitate the victory of good over evil and gave the teachings of leading an ideal life, which are recorded in the Holy Book Gita.
